AI Interrogation Too Mean vs Too Nice
How shutdowns and stalling lies happen — and the exact recovery moves that save the remaining tries.
Every AI Interrogation session lives between two fail states. If you are too mean, the suspect shuts down and you lose information. If you are too nice, they keep lying and the try counter dies on empty charm. This page is the dedicated repair manual for that band. Pair it with the pressure checklist mid-run and interrogation strategies before you queue a spike like Case 005.
The official TrueTalk AI description still states the rule in one line: too mean, they shut down; too nice, they lie. Players search “too aggressive,” “suspect went silent,” and “AI will not confess” because the rule is easy to read and hard to feel in a live terminal. This guide turns it into a diagnostic.
Diagnose which fail you are in
| Signal | Likely fail | First move |
|---|---|---|
| One-word answers, “I am done talking,” freeze | Too mean / shutdown | Drop insults, restate one fact, ask a yes/no |
| Long stories, jokes, tomato-sauce excuses, new hobbies | Too nice / stall | Cut charm with one evidence item |
| Mix of both in three tries | You are oscillating | Pick one fact and stay on it |
| Full confession already on screen | Neither — you won | Stop typing |
If you cannot tell, look at your last two sends. Accusations with no object or place almost always push mean. Open questions like “tell me everything you feel” almost always push nice.
Why the band exists
AI Interrogation is a solo puzzle (maxPlayers 1) with about 10 tries. The AI is not a friend and not a punching bag. Mean without proof looks like a bad cop who has no case. Nice without proof looks like an interview the suspect can ride until the timer ends. The productive band is firm + specific: one fact, one question, wait for the full reply.
That is the same physics in how to play and the Marcus bar case. Warehouse Fire just punishes leaving the band faster.
Recovery from shutdown (too mean)
Do not double down. A shutdown is not “they are guilty so yell louder.” It is the game telling you the next insult is a wasted try.
- Acknowledge you overreached in one short sentence.
- Put a brief fact on the table (clock, hammer, gas station, warehouse sighting).
- Ask a closed question about that fact only.
- If they stay cold, spend one try on a softer mapping question, then return to the fact.
- Never stack three accusations in a row after silence.
Template: “I will keep this to the evidence. Were you at the [place] when [event] happened?”
If the room is already dead by try 6, reset the case. Teaching yourself the band on a fresh counter is cheaper than begging a frozen suspect for four remaining sends. Use beginner tips if this happens every session.
Recovery from stalling lies (too nice)
Nice stalls feel productive because the AI talks a lot. Word count is not progress. Tomato sauce, dirtbike hobbies, and breakfast plans are classic stall textures — see the bar/hammer ladder in how to get a confession.
- Interrupt the next ramble by quoting one sentence they already said.
- Introduce one evidence item they have not addressed.
- Demand a yes/no or a single location.
- If they invent a new hobby, refuse the hobby and return to the brief.
- Raise firmness only after the fact is on the table.
Template: “You said you went home. The brief places you near [place]. Which is true?”
The three-try correction drill
When you notice you left the band, spend the next three tries as a drill instead of “playing it by ear”:
- Map restore — one calm fact question.
- Pressure — one evidence contradiction.
- Band check — if the reply is cold, soften; if it is fluffy, cut.
Write those three lines in the question planner before you send the first. The planner exists so panic does not choose your wording.
Case-specific notes
- Early base cases forgive a mean try 1 more than later cases. Still do not make it a habit.
- Case 004 often punishes early aggression; stay professional through the mapping phase.
- Case 005 punishes both: insults without location proof shut the run down, and boots/dirtbike chat is a nice-stall trap.
- Daily Cases hide the brief’s real levers. If you do not know the objects yet, you cannot afford mean.
- Custom Cases are the best place to practice the band on purpose: author a suspect who stalls, then force yourself to cut.
What not to do
- Do not treat shutdown as a glitch you mash through.
- Do not treat a charming paragraph as cooperation.
- Do not ask three questions in one try hoping one lands in the band.
- Do not download “auto confess” tools — there are no verified public kits; see the Scripts Hub.
- Do not wait for codes to buy extra tries. There are still zero verified codes, and the live listing is currently free anyway (access and pricing).

Stay in the band: specific, firm, one fact per try. Mean without proof is a shutdown. Nice without proof is a stall. The confession only appears in the middle.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for AI Interrogation detectives.
The suspect stopped answering. Did I break the game?
Usually no — that is a shutdown from being too mean. Soften, cite one fact, and ask a closed question. See the recovery steps above.
They talk a lot but never confess. What is happening?
That is the too-nice stall. Cut the charm with one evidence item. The confession guide shows the ladder.
Should I insult them to raise pressure?
Not without proof. Insults without facts are the fastest shutdown path, especially on Case 005.
What tool should I open mid-run?
The pressure checklist for escalate vs soften, and the question planner for the next send.
